Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena Kinta'nija Peres" April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most popular Mexican-American entertainers of late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was basing it on Latin music and Latin albums. Her fashion choices earned her the nickname "Tejano Madonna". She is also among the most popular Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut on the music scene as part of the group Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. They were frequently criticised in the 1980s and refused performances at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained notoriety. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and released her debut album self-titled the following year. In the meantime, her brother became her primary music producer and songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. It was hailed by music critics as the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a smash and became her signature tune. Live! Live! In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the best-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as being responsible for Tejano music's debut as a marketable genre and it became one of the most well-known Latin music subgenres at the time.
